IPL skin rejuvenation aftercare

To enjoy the best results and to avoid any adverse reactions it is important to follow the aftercare instructions following your IPL treatment.

Immediately after treatment, there should be mild erythema (redness) and mild oedema (very mild swelling) at the treatment site, which can last up to 2 hours (sometimes longer). The erythema may last 2-3 days. The treated area will feel like sunburn for a few hours after treatment. Some patients note that their skin feels pleasantly warm after treatment. Mild swelling and hives may appear under the eyes, this can be managed with a cool compress and antihistamines (taken as directed on the label) and usually subsides within 48 hours.

Your treating clinician may use an optional cooling method after treatment to ensure your comfort immediately after treatment. The heat from the energy based light pulses may be slightly uncomfortable during and immediately after treatment. Cold gel packs can be applied 1-2 hours post-treatment to reduce discomfort. Your clinician will ensure a post treatment cooling and comforting emulsion be applied to the treated area as well as immediate UV protection.

Your treating clinician will discuss your current skincare regime with you during consultation and will inform you when you may resume the use of your usual skin care products, and use of the recommended products to assist in the best possible treatment outcome are explained. To get the most out of your treatment and to aid the recovery process, we recommend purchasing an IPL homecare skincare pack, available at Derm Haus Brisbane.

Any targeted pigmentation will start to appear darker immediately and within the first few days following treatment. The superficial darkened pigment will flake off and gently self-dissolve like dry skin within 7-10 days. Please avoid picking or scratching or exfoliating the treated skin and avoid any acids, exfoliants or anything applied harshly or aggressively to the treated area. Vessels which were targeted during your treatment may appear darker for 48 hours post treatment, or appear as a small bruise,  then begin to fade over the following 7 days. If general redness was treated, mild superficial swelling and hives may be apparent for 48 hours.

IPL aftercare instructions

To maximise the healing benefits from the IPL treatment, please follow these aftercare instructions:

  • Makeup can be applied after the treatment if the skin is not irritated

  • Avoid sun exposure to reduce the chance of hyperpigmentation (darker pigmentation)

  • Avoid picking or scratching or exfoliating the treated area for several days

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours after treatment

  • Avoid spas, saunas, hot showers, and try to remain indoors in a clean, cool environment the day of the treatment and keep hydrated and elevated as much as possible

  • Apply a quality SPF 30+ sunscreen everyday throughout the course of treatment. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 zinc oxide or titanium dioxide with UV A/B sunblock

  • There are no restrictions on bathing/showering other than washing/cleansing areas gently with cool to warm temperatures.

Please contact Derm Haus Brisbane if you are concerned or have questions following your IPL skin rejuvenation treatment.
