Microdermabrasion aftercare

To enjoy the best results from your microdermabrasion treatment and to avoid any adverse reactions it is important to follow your aftercare instructions.

Following your treatment, the newly exposed cells from your microdermabrasion treatment are vulnerable to developing irritation or dryness. Therefore, careful precautions must be taken to prevent complications and to ensure the best results.

Immediately after your treatment, your skin will likely have a slight pink, sensitised appearance and may feel warm and tender for several hours. You may experience some minor suction bruising which will subside within 5 days. This is a normal skin response and should subside in the next 24 hours.

You must not scratch or use any exfoliating products as this may damage the new skin and cause hyperpigmentation and scarring.

For the 24 hours following your microdermabrasion appointment:

  • Keep the area hydrated and drink lots of water

  • Regularly apply a hydrating moisturiser

  • Avoid AHAs, BHAs, retinols, salicylic acid, and glycolic acid

  • Switch to a gentle cleanser that has been recommended by your Cosmetic Nurse or Dermal Therapist

  • Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen if you have experienced bruising

  • Avoid swimming in chlorinated pools and spas, strenuous exercise, sweating, and saunas

  • If you require makeup, use a quality mineral makeup and remember to clean makeup brushes regularly.

For the 2 weeks following your microdermabrasion appointment:

  • After 5 days you may re-introduce your regular skin care regime

  • We recommend booking a DMK Enzyme Therapy treatment 7 days after your treatment to assist in the exfoliation process

  • Avoid facials, peels, laser hair removal or waxing in the area

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure

  • Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen every day.
